Maui is number two as far as size and visitor numbers but consistently ranks #1 in travel magazine readers polls due to many nice beaches and world class luxury hotels. Maui also ranks number one in visitor spending. People on average spend more money on Maui than they do on any of the other Hawaiian islands while visiting. The combination of hotel spas with every imaginable treatment and many activities including cruising down a 10,000+ ft. mountain on a bicycle must help. Many condos help lower the cost of a stay by offering cooking facilities and generally lower rates than luxury hotels. This is also a great option for families. Also remember that there are people that live on this island. Just ask a kama'aina (local) where they eat! Costco, Wal Mart and K Mart are all very close to the exit from the airport and are great places to get discount items for your vacation. Hotels and condos are in several areas.. Wailea has luxury resort hotels and some condos, Kihei has budget to moderate hotels and many condos, and West Maui including Lahaina and Kaanapali Beach has a wide variety of accommodations ranging from budget to 5 star. You can take day trips (or overnight) by boat to the islands of Molokai and Lanai from Maui
